Tracking numbers are numbers assigned to packages when they are shipped. They are useful to track time sensitive deliveries. Tracking numbers can vary between 12-14 digits. Earlier, Ground tracking numbers were up-to 15 digits and Express numbers were up-to 12 digits. The FedEx uses tracking numbers ranging from 12-14.
There are companies in the United States like UPS, FedEx, and The United States Postal Service that use tracking numbers. The international S10 UPU Standard is used by most American and European postal services. S10 is a system for assigning 13-character identifiers to postal items for their easy tracking.
For domestic packages in the US, a UPS tracking number will start with “1Z” followed by a 6 character shipper number, a 2 digit service level indicator, and finally 8 digits identifying the package, for a total of 18 characters.
DHL Express uses the carrier-independent ISO standard 15459-1 for the identification of single packages. These identifiers consist of uppercase characters and numerals, and can be up to 35 digits long. DHL Express also uses numeric identifiers of exactly ten digits to track transport orders. Both the codes are used by customers for tracking their packages.
