Roman numerals were, unsurprisingly, used in ancient Rome as a number system. I stands for 1, V for 5, X for 10, L for 50 and C for 100. M is 1000.

A symbol placed after another of equal or greater value adds its value and symbol placed before one of greater value subtracts its value.

That is the main structure of roman numerals.
